ONE FIA RULING COULD RESHAPE THE NASCAR EURO TITLE FIGHT
Gianmarco Ercoli could suddenly find himself just 22 points from the championship lead heading into the double-points finale at Zolder.
The NASCAR Euro Series championship picture may not be settled quite yet.
Just two days before cars hit the track at Zolder, the FIA International Court of Appeal is scheduled to hear the case involving the Brands Hatch decision and the outcome could dramatically alter the title race.
At the center of that scenario is Gianmarco Ercoli.
If the FIA overturns the decision and the disputed points are restored, the 2023 champion would enter the season finale just 22 points behind championship leader Vittorio Ghirelli.
With double points available at Zolder, that margin would put Ercoli directly back into championship contention.
And that could complicate things considerably.
Alumitec Racing already has Nelson Piquet Jr. fighting near the front of the standings. Adding Ercoli to the equation would potentially give the team two legitimate championship threats entering the final weekend.
Ercoli also brings something particularly valuable to that situation: experience.
He has already won this championship, and his recent performances including a runner-up finish at Vallelunga suggest he has the pace to influence what happens in Belgium.
Everything now hinges on October 15.
If the FIA ruling stands, Ercoli faces a steep climb.
If it is overturned, he arrives at Zolder 22 points from the lead and suddenly, the championship has another contender nobody can afford to ignore.
One ruling. Two races. And potentially an entirely different championship.
